The process of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you by altering the way your memories are stored, making them easier to manage. We have professional, qualified EMDR Therapists in Beverley and East Yorkshire, available to help you today.

For some people, when something traumatic has happened to them, the memory of this experience can come crashing back, causing them to relive the event with the same intensity of feeling, as if it is happening in the present moment. These ‘flashbacks’ or nightmares are thought to occur because the mind and body were too overwhelmed during the event to process it.

The process of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help by altering the way these memories are stored within the brain, making them easier to manage. This is accomplished using an eight-phase approach to address the past, present and future aspects of a stored memory. It includes the use of ‘bilateral sensory input’, such as side-to-side eye movements, hand tapping and auditory tones as you recall and reprocess the memories.

Your therapist will complete a series of thorough ‘preparation’ phases with you, including developing relaxation techniques which you will be encouraged and supported to use during and after sessions. EMDR therapists are usually trained mental health professionals who have undergone additional training and accreditation in EMDR.

EMDR is most helpful with post-traumatic stress but can also be helpful in alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, phobias and low self-esteem.
