Our ‘Best Match’ Principle

At Focus Wellbeing Services we understand that finding the right therapist can be a difficult task. With so many therapists offering different approaches, it can be hard to know which to choose. Here’s how we make the process easier for you.

Perhaps you are considering therapy for the first time and are wondering which approach might be best for you? Or, maybe you have seen a number of therapists and have struggled to find the right one? This can be a daunting and disheartening process, making it all the more difficult to get the help you want, when you want it. A poor experience of therapy can have a lasting effect and even put you off looking for help again. Lots has been written about client-therapist matching and at Focus Wellbeing Services, we know this can play a significant part in helping you get what you want out of therapy. Using our ‘Best Match’ principle, we will make this process straightforward and stress-free.

How it Works

At Focus Wellbeing Services we will take our time to get to know you and your preferences. We will use a range of validated tools, such as the Cooper-Norcross Inventory of Preferences, to help you get that ‘best match’.

Here are some examples of what we will explore with you:

Goals
Is setting goals important to you in therapy, or does this approach not suit you?

Structure
Do you respond well to structure of prefer a more free-flowing approach?

Work Between Sessions
Does the idea of ‘homework’ between sessions interest you and feel important?

Taking the Lead
Would you prefer a therapist to take the lead in sessions or would you value being able to lead the direction of sessions?

Feelings or Thoughts
Do you prefer to talk about your feelings or is exploring your thinking process more important?

Past or Present
Is exploring past issues important to you or would you prefer to focus on the present?

Gentle or Challenging
Would you prefer to be challenged in therapy or does a more gentle approach suit you best?

We will also explore any previous experiences of therapy. Did you try an approach previously that worked well? Do you have a preference of therapist gender, ethnicity or background? Finally, is there anything you particularly might dislike happening in therapy?

By the end of your initial referral conversation, we are confident you will feel assured and ready to get off to the best start in therapy!
